Dating had always been awkward for Shado. While he’d been in high school, girls saw him as the ‘nerd.’

‘The guy from Chess Club.’

‘The newspaper photographer.’

Yeah. Chick magnet.

When he joined the Army, it was with the intention of changing himself. Not so much inside as outside.

He was a good runner but had never joined the Cross Country Team because he didn’t want people to watch him run. He’d heard people make fun of his spaghetti arms and legs and the last thing he wanted was to see photos of him running in the yearbook.

Being awkward wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. He just didn’t want a permanent record of it.

The Army pushed him, and he pushed even more.

He wanted to do better, be better.

And he could see the results.

So could the girls when he went home to visit his folks when he was on leave.

That made things even worse.

Seeing girls who’d given him less than the time-of-day fawn all over him as if they’d never set eyes on him before left a bad taste in his mouth and made it impossible for him to get or keep an appetite for more.

The number of women he’d dated as a soldier in the Army weren’t even worth talking about.

Keeping their true assignment secret was a good thing for the most part. Women who hung out at bars near military bases were constantly on the lookout for someone with rank.

And Shado had never offered up any of that kind of information to anyone.

He was as anonymous as he could be about his rank and assignment, and it had served him well. The only thing that was changing his mindset was after he’d seen how happy Ajax and Hiilani made each other.

“Hey, I’m ready to go.”

Shado looked up to see Lilinoe in the front doorway, her bother standing behind her inside the house.

Wes gave him a pointed look and then pointed a rather insistent finger at the clock on the wall.

Okay, so they were going to play it that way? Fine.

Shado wasn’t interested in upsetting Lilinoe’s brother. He wasn’t interested in a hook up.

Holding out his hand, he smiled when Lilinoe walked up to him and put her hand in his. “You look amazing.”

The smile that lit her face made him feel ten feet tall. He wanted to give her that same smile again and again. It said that she felt as beautiful as he saw her and that was near transcendent.

Looking down at their joined hands he couldn’t help but feel like the luckiest man alive.

“Do you have a place you want to go?”

He looked up waiting for her to answer.

“I’d be happy with Zippy’s. There’s a Korean BBQ in a nearby strip mall.”

Shado shook his head. “I’m talking about someplace quiet. Maybe some candles. Some amazing food to match the company I’ll have with me tonight.”

“You certainly know how to say the right things.”

Shado turned their hands to the side, gently squeezing her fingers. “I’m a mess when it comes to dating. The girls in high school were more likely to laugh at me than have a basic conversation.
